2018-08-15

DAVID, Panama – Host Panama and the United States both booked their tickets to the Super Round with convincing wins Thursday, as the Opening Round of the WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup came to a close.

Chinese Taipei, Panama and USA — all 4-1 in the Opening Round —  advance to the Super Round, with USA the group winner and Panama and Chinese Taipei seeded second and third, respectively.

USA 8, Brazil 0

Play resumed from Monday’s contest that was suspended due to rain with USA holding a 4-0 lead over No. 19 Brazil and the game continued to move in USA’s favour as they cruised to an 8-0 victory.

Andrew Painter was the winning pitcher working 4.2 innings and yielding just four hits and a walk to go along with eight strikeouts.

USA received two RBI performances from Brady House and Luke Leto as they used 11 hits to score eight runs.

After surrendering four runs in just 0.2 of inning pitched on Monday, Brazil’s Matheus Ribeiro Magalhaes took the loss.

Panama 18, Germany 0

Needing a win to officially qualify for the Super Round, host Panama left nothing to chance using 16 hits to overpower No. 21 Germany, 18-0.

Carlos Gonzalez Cossio went 3-for-4 with a doubled and drove in tow runs while Reginald Preciado Arauz went 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI.

Three Panama pitchers limited Germany to just three hits including winning pitcher Francisco Cardenas Tejada who tossed three innings and had two strikeouts.
