Panama downs Dominican Republic as Finals set for U-15 Baseball World Cup

DAVID, Panama – The Panama U-15 National Team continued its hot streak at the U-15 Baseball World Cup, defeating Dominican Republic, 3-2, Saturday night to close the Super Round and set up Sunday’s World Championship Final with top-ranked USA.

Panama opened the scoring in the second on RBI singles from Edwin Hidalgo Osorio and William Morales Castillo before Osorio put them up 3-0 in the fourth on an RBI double.

Deyvison De Los Santos Ruiz put the Dominican Republic on the scoreboard in the sixth with a two-run double but Panama’s José Sianca Perez closed the door the rest of the way to earn the save.

Panama starting pitcher Francisco Cardenas Tejada earned the win with 5.1 innings of work on the mound while Cristofer Gomez Cruz took the loss.

USA won the Super Round and will be the home team against Panama in the World Championship Final.

In Sunday’s bronze medal match, Chinese Taipei will be the visitor against Japan. Japan beat Chinese Taipei, 5-2, in their Super Round meeting.

Cuba — who entered the global tournament as the two-time defending U-15 World Champions — will not be among the medal winners for the first time since the U-15 Baseball World Cup was launched in 2012.

Dominican Republic has been reinforcing its youth programme and finished in 6th Place.
